Alex Machacek '24 Tales' CD Review

24 stories is based on an interesting premise. All songs were composed by Machacek around a single drummer Marco Minnemann to take extraodinaire had held previously in the study. Recording without a rhythm track alone is full of twists Minnemann rhythmic turns, and changing time signatures. Take 51 minutes Minnemann solo Machacek is divided into 24 mini-compositions that segue into each other.

24 has shown that Machacek is not a guitar virtuoso fusion, but also a composer of incredible imagination and amazing chops as he navigates his composition written around a virtual minefield Minnemann changing rhythms.

The first song On your mark set opens with an ostinato played on acoustic guitars and saturated. After stating very saturated angular melody, Machacek launches into a whole section that reminds me of some of the best moments of Return To Forever. The highly compressed clean several fingers tapped section of this piece is unique in itself. Machacek tone is distorted in the sections a little grainy, with a digital light 'fizz' - no doubt due in part to the amp simulation - but crunchy texture that provides a nice nonetheless. On your mark, in fact - there are some incredible alternate sections collected that have a 20-something years, Al Di Meola sweat!

Sit back and Chillax is a piece relaxed, acoustic slide guitar in the context of a fretless bass synth pads and voice of the wife Sumitra Machacek, a singer and artist in his own right. There are even sections where Machacek sounds like you are about to venture into Indian territory slide guitar, while inspired by Chick Corea on piano part here makes me wonder if Alex is how to get on keyboards, as he is on guitar!

Anamika has a beautiful clean electric guitar before launching into a saturated higher legato melody - a tribute to the great fusion Allan Holdsworth, no doubt. Pros and cons of depression occurs only painful, but again very soon, while Tranquillo is the right of the pages of a return of the young and hungry as ever, replete with acoustic guitar passages in unison and piano.

If there is a complaint I have about this album would be alone Machacek are always too short - just seems to be about to develop an idea to fruition solo, another section set begins. Although this could also be due to the nature of pre-recorded format-drums on this album. Or maybe, like a guitar fan, I just want to hear a great player like Machacek extend a little more.

The longest track at 4:37 (most of the tracks on 24 Such means out in less than 2 minutes each), sweet torture features intricately made the acoustic guitar section followed by a heavy-duty guitar tones industrial. Somehow, the universe of composition Machacek, it all makes sense!

Feel Me is a funky piece of rock, stepped sections for assembly on acoustic guitar and the other only inspired legato Holdsworth. This one I think has the better tone of the album track and run their lines perfectly Machacek.

As a guest on trombone on three tracks is Martin Ptak. In The Club has a pair of solo trombone very elegant and hip, I really like his tone and phrasing Ptak adds texture and film scoring with his trombone overdubs See you there.

Marco Minnemann gives us an impromptu lesson in the strange time, with rates of change in Minnemaus In Da House, while Sexy Machacek is the delivery of its single most beautiful, in my opinion, 24 Tales.

There are so many instrumental layers to this album. Distorted tones and acoustic guitars lead not only coexist but complement each other perfectly in ways never before imagined. And I had to remind myself over and over again that the instrumental parts and layers were made after the fact - that is the force Machacek manages to weave fine guitar parts, bass and keyboard with incredible improvisation Minnemann is!
