Prostate cancer starts in the prostate, a chestnut-shaped gland located at the base of the bladder of a man right in front of the rectum. The prostate is part of the male reproductive and urinary system and surrounding the base or neck of the bladder. It has two lobes that surround the urethra. The urethra carries urine from the bladder through the prostate and then through the penis. The prostate size will vary from one man to another, ranging from the size of a walnut to that of a small apple. The size of the prostate of a man generally increases with age. The prostate is covered by a layer of connective tissue called the prostatic capsule.
Is responsible for producing seminal fluid, the fluid that a man's semen is performed during orgasm. Also plays a role in controlling the flow of urine. The lobes that surround the urethra contains muscle fibers that contract to delay or stop the flow of urine through the urethra.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is found in almost 26,000 men this year. Twenty six thousand men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer the next year and another 26,000 + a year after that. In fact, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian men.
Although there is no single known cause of prostate cancer, some indicators of the larger figure than others. What is known is the risk of a man developing prostate cancer increases significantly with age. Few men under 50 years of age have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Most prostate cancers are found in men around 65 years and over. Another factor is whether any blood relatives have developed cancer of the prostate. Your chances of developing this disease increases considerably if family members have developed.
In addition, men of African descent are 60% more likely to develop prostate cancer than Caucasian men, while Asian men are less likely to develop it. The reasons for the disparity are not known.
The first signs and detection
Early detection of disease is critical. This disease has few symptoms in its early stages. Symptoms become more severe and numerous as the progress against cancer. Because other conditions can have similar symptoms, having any of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have cancer. The important thing is that you have to check if they develop.
The first sign may be a change in bladder habits:
Do you think that the need to urinate more often?
Do you have to get out of bed to urinate once, twice or even three times in one night?
Is your need to urinate is sometimes very intense
Ever have difficulty getting urine flow to start?
Do you have trouble stopping the flow of urine?
Are you sometimes can not urinate at all?
Urine flow is weak or decreased?
Have you experienced an interruption in the flow of urine?
Have you had the feeling that your bladder has not emptied completely after urination?
Have you experienced pain or a burning sensation when urinating?
Other signs include blood in urine or semen and pain during orgasm.
If you have experienced one or more of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor and get check.
Later signs and symptoms
Prostate cancer is usually a slow growing cancer. Symptoms usually begin to appear after the tumor becomes large enough to affect the surrounding tissues and organs. As the cancer progresses, other signs and symptoms may appear late.
You may experience pain in the bones or joints, especially in the back, hips, thighs and neck. You may experience weight loss or feeling constantly tired. You may also feel weakness or numbness in the legs or feet. Another sign is a low red blood count or anemia. This is detected by blood tests by your doctor. And finally, can experience a loss of control of the bladder or intestine.
Early detection and screening are crucial because the cure rate is very high when detected early. Once cancer metastasizes (spreads) outside the prostate, the cure is very unlikely. It is best to have regular exams before you notice any symptoms of prostate cancer, because the symptoms are rarely felt in the early stages of the disease.
