Several Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that originates in the mesothelial cells of different organs, usually the lungs and less frequently in the heart and abdominal cavity. Symptoms that may occur depend primarily on the development of mesothelioma site. Because cancer cells grow in the lining of the organs in the organ tissues, the function of this organ is affected first. In later stages of the disease, symptoms are more widespread than the disease spreads to various parts of the body (metastasis).

Pleural mesothelioma

The pleura refer to the layer of cells of the lungs. In simple terms, the pleura is a sac that protects the lungs from external shocks and friction with other bodies. It also secretes a fluid that lubricates vital lung movements preventing damage to the lung surface. Pleural mesothelioma refers to the development of cancer cells in the pleura. When you start pleural mesothelioma, a series of small white nodules appear on the surface of the pleura. These are joined to form a crust that compresses the lungs. It also spreads outwards in the chest wall and ribs.

However, the first symptoms of the disease are not severe enough to cause alarm, delaying diagnosis, resulting in aggravated circumstances. Inflammation of the lungs, both by the presence of cancer cells and agents thereof (eg, asbestos fibers) result in increased fluid production by the pleura. This is known as pleural effusion. Excess fluid in the lungs result in symptoms such as:

* Cough
* Wheezing
Difficulty breathing
* Hoarseness

You may also have chest pain due to increasing pressure on the diaphragm and lungs as a result of pleural effusion and constriction of the tissues by cancer cells.
Peritoneal mesothelioma

The presence of cancer cells in the peritoneum (the membrane surrounding the abdomen and stomach) may have different consequences depending on the location of the tumors. The most common symptoms are:

* Unexplained weight loss
Fever
* Increased abdominal girth
* Bloating
* The presence of fluid in the abdomen
Fever
Weight loss
* Loss of appetite
* Anemia
Fatigue
* Intestinal obstruction

In the late stages of the disease, the platelet count in the blood increases significantly as a result of increased blood clotting.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

With the development of cancer in the pericardium (membrane that surrounds the heart), the symptoms are very similar to other heart conditions, so that the difficult to diagnose pericardial mesothelioma. Most symptoms arise because of an accumulation of fluid in the pericardium results in:

* Palpitations
* Chest pain
* Blows
* Cough
Difficulty breathing

As can be seen in the three cases of mesothelioma, the symptoms are very nonspecific. In other words, the disease has no specific symptoms of their own. Most of its symptoms may mimic symptoms of other diseases (including some relatively common diseases such as influenza in the case of pleural mesothelioma). Therefore, the diagnosis of mesothelioma is very difficult.
