Symptoms of Asbestos Related Medical Conditions

Asbestos is a mineral fiber type and is used for reinforcement and insulation. Until 1973 was used as raw material for various products. Its use was later discontinued because of its dangerous qualities. Asbestos fibers are said to have very harmful qualities that can be fatal. Anyone who comes into contact with asbestos fiber at work may be at risk for diseases that are related to asbestos.

Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, cause mesothelioma cancer. In this condition the mesothelium lining present in the stomach, lungs and various other internal organs in the body is affected. Asbestos exposure can also cause asbestosis and lung disorders that can be very serious. The problem with asbestos symptoms is that the disease can not be detected in its early stages to be cured, because the symptoms are barely noticeable.

The symptoms that are related to asbestos are subtle and not easily identifiable. It may take many years from the time of exposure to asbestos fibers for symptoms to become evident. So the person suffering from the harmful effects of exposure to asbestos may not be aware that something is bad for long.

There are different kinds of asbestos symptoms that can be experienced by an individual. These symptoms can vary in degree depending on the type of asbestos affliction one is suffering from. Asbestosis is not cancer and is progressive in nature. Asbestosis can affect a person as soon as it is exposed to asbestos fibers. However, symptoms may not appear for fifteen to thirty years after the first person has been exposed to asbestos. This disease causes a buildup of tissue that replace the tissues present in the middle of the lower lungs, obstructing the normal operation. Common symptoms are chronic cough, dyspnea, or shortness of breath, chest pain and shortness of breath.

Malignant mesothelioma is another very serious asbestos disease. The symptoms of this disease is not noticed until fifty years after the first instance the person was exposed to asbestos fibers. The symptoms depend largely on the type of mesothelioma is. A person suffering from this disease may experience chest pain, dyspnea, weight loss, anemia, bloating, bowel problems, night sweats, fever and persistent cough.

It is very difficult to detect asbestos symptoms, especially when the disease is in its early stages. Anomalies that occur when the disease begins may not appear on x-ray of the lungs. It's just a much later stage of mesothelioma or asbestosis that the abnormalities appear distinct and more prominent.

In advanced asbestosis, the chest radiograph will be able to show abnormalities and opacity evident in the affected lung. These symptoms may appear as linear shadows that reveal the X-ray.

Treatment options vary depending on the type of asbestos disease the patient suffers from. Mesothelioma can be treated with appropriate surgery radiation and chemotherapy.
