Prostate Cancer Symptoms to Watch For

Prostate cancer is the number one cancer among men in North America. Although rarely affects men under 50 years old, could still be at risk if you live an unhealthy lifestyle or have a history of that family. There is no single cause of prostate cancer, but there are several risk factors.

The main risk factor is age. 80% of men over age 80 of cancer of the prostate. If you are overweight or obese, smoking, drinking more than 2 drinks per day or have a family history of prostate cancer, then you are at greater risk. Talk to your doctor about risk factors for prostate cancer since the elimination or reduction of these risks can decrease your chance of getting the disease. It may not be able to do anything about aging and family history, but there are definite changes lifestyle can do to reduce risk.

Your doctor will recommend a test for prostate cancer if you are over 50 years of age or older than 40 years with high risk factors. Tests may include a digital rectal examination and / or a PSA test. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should request testing. Early detection is the key to curing prostate cancer.

-The need to urinate frequently, especially at night

-Pain with urination

-An urgent need to urinate (usually - not once)

The inability to urinate

-A decrease in urine flow or interrupted current

-The feeling that the bladder does not empty after urination

-Blood in the urine

-Blood in semen

-Ejaculation is painful

If you have any of these signs of prostate cancer, talk to your doctor about testing. The presence of these symptoms does not mean you have prostate cancer - these symptoms may also be other health problems too, but still must be addressed as soon as possible.

Talk to your doctor about tests that you should have, along with the pros and cons and the cost of each. Find out what their risks of contracting the disease and find out how often to get tested. The earlier you start the test, the sooner you start treatment if diagnosed positively. The good news is that prostate cancer is highly curable in its early stages. In the later stages, there are few treatment options and less likely to cure.

If the evidence suggests that cancer tumors exist, will have to consider your treatment options, including traditional treatments such as surgery and radiation. There are also newer treatments for prostate cancer and HIFU, which offer similar cure rates with fewer significant side effects. HIFU uses high intensity focused ultrasound to destroy cancerous tumors. This is a non-surgical, non invasive, appropriate treatment for men with localized prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about all treatment options and decide what is best for your age, health and stage of cancer.
